The villages around Manthan are faced with the unique problem of saline water due to the close proximity of the Sambhar Salt Lake. With the decline in rainfall over the last thirty years, all drinking water in the area has turned saline leaving villagers with no source for fresh water.
With the help of Barefoot College, Central Salt and Marine Chemical Research Institute (CSMCRI), Manthan installed solar powered Reserve Osmosis Plants (RO) plants in 4 villages (Kotri, Bhopa ki Dhani, Jhag and Sinodiya) .
The RO plants filter the salt and fluorides present in the groundwater making it fit for drinking. Nearly 5000 liters of clean water is available to around 4000 people everyday.
The local community has been trained to manage and operate these plants thus ensuring its long-term sustainability.
