Rajasthan is known for its limited water resources. Besides this, the area around the Sambhar Salt lake has seen a decline in rainfall over the last thirty years with an increase is salinity and fluorides in the groundwater. As fresh water sources have completely diminished and the groundwater increasingly become saline, communities are left with a serious water crisis in the area.

Besides this, social issues due to a heterogeneous societal set-up has resulted in unequal access to safe drinking water.

Due to this unique issue in the area, Manthan has largely focused on conservation of natural resources especially water through its two important programmes- Watershed constructions and Reverse Osmosis Plants to ensure sustainability of traditional livelihoods and safe drinking water.
